You and Me

A leap in the dark
You don’t always know what will happen when you start melding images together. The silhouettes of two children playing was far too dark and contrasty to make an attractive book cover.

By combining it with an abstract painting (in a complex procedure I’m not going to try to explain) I ended up with this lighter, intriguing image. I imagined it might be a snapshot of two children who went in very different directions as they grew up – just my interpretation.

When the Bell Rings

Colour isn’t fixed
This was a mono photograph (black and white). Although it would have ‘worked’ like that, and been quite beautiful, it would have had a different impact. The original may have suited another title better. I created a duotone to add colour (a mixture of two colours). I could have used any combination of dark and light colours to produce different ‘moods’. In reality I would match the colour cast to the author’s brief.

The Last Party

Anonymity of protagonists
Many writers intentionally give very little physical description of their main characters. I have often asked what ‘Sarah’ looks likes only to find the author doesn’t really know. So if you really want to feature two characters on the cover you’re better not to show their faces. So this image is useful in that respect – unless one of the characters happens to be blonde.

The photographer had turned this picture upside down to create a mystery to it. I liked it the right way up, lightened considerably and then cropped it viscously to make the image simpler. It’s a neutral image that will be carried by a good title, rather than dominate it. Superimpose a different title and the image will adapt to that message. Try imagining ‘The Day it Rained Forever’ or ‘Suddenly Last Summer’.

When it works – let it be. Some designers want to stamp their mark on everything that passes through their hands. When you a perfect image match for a title, just use it, don’t try to get ‘clever’. This was so perfect for a post apocalyptic title that it needed no tweaking.

Photo montage and overlays can produce results that can only be accomplished by an experienced designer. This book cover illustrates that point. Not only have cutouts and fades combined the images seamlessly, but the colour balances have changed changed to produce a more eye-grabbing palette. Warm colours in dark surroundings are a less a common combination and make the image unusual.

Fever Creek

I loved the colours in this image when I came across it, but how many people write a novel that features a rowing boat on a river or lake?

One thing a good designer can do is see potential. We are used to imagining a photo being used in a way that was wasn’t conceived when it was shot.

In this case I thought the colour, originally serene, could be used to reflect a sinister undercurrent. So many stories start peacefully and erupt into chaos and violence. So I looked at how the title could change the concept and vice versa.
